A Day to be Dedicated to the Cause of World Peace

Happy Veterans Day!
President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice day in 1919. It was made a legal holiday in 1938 with the proclamation "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace". Armistice day was renamed Veterans day in 1954. The holiday marks the anniversary of WWI, and honors all who have served in the military. In 2008 there were 23.2 million Veterans in the US. The National Veterans Day ceremony takes place at Arlington National Cemetery (see photo) each year. Take some time today to honor any one you know who has served in the military. Maybe catch a parade in your neighborhood.

Kids home from school today? Here is a fun website I found with crafts stories and activities about veterans day: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/veterans/
