Roasted Chestnuts are Wonderful!
And aren't hard to cook.
You can boil them or roast them. If you are mashing them or putting them in another recipe then boiling is recommended as they come out softer. If you are eating them plain then roasting them is recommended.
Either way you will want to start by cutting an X in the side so they don't explode. This will also help you peal them once cooked. If boiling add chestnuts to water in a sauce pan, bring to boil and then reduce to a simmer for about 15 minutes. If roasting them you will want to place them with the "x" side up (so the steam can escape) on a cookie sheet and bake them in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Stirring occasionally. And watching them because they are easy to burn. Once your chestnuts are cooked and cooled enough to touch you will want to peal them while they are still warm. They become a bit more difficult to peal once cooled. Pealing them is time consuming part but part of the tradition of roasted chestnuts.

who knew it was so easy! And good to know about the X to avoid explosions. Someone learned that lesson the hard way!
