I have school aged Children who are home for Christmas break and we love Christmas so we set up as early as possible and don't take it all down until my children are back to school. So for those of you following my plan now is the time to start packing up, unless of course, you already have!
A couple of tips for packing up:
- Group like things - A box of lights, a box of tree decorations, a box of reusable gift bags and ribbon, a box of home decorations, etc.
- Get friendly with masking tape and a sharpie - marking on the outside of the box what is in the box will help you find things quickly next year.
- I think I am missing a box - Avoid saying this next year by including the number of total boxes when you label the boxes. And store the all boxes together in a group, away from your other holiday boxes.
- Keep 1 empty box. Yes, empty. And keep it where it is easy to get at. Then if you find gift items through the year that remind you of someone you can store them in the box until Christmas.
- Get rid of a box - When you pack up keep one box as the "stuff to give away box" and sort while you pack.
- And once you have it all packed up and stored in the garage or crammed into a closet or wherever. Keep just one small (cardboard even) box for any stray items that you find. Maybe it is just my house, but it seems just as I have stored everything in the loft I find a reindeer headband, a Christmas coffee mug, an ornament under the couch, a bell on a door handle that I forgot, or that my son is playing with (yet another) nutcracker. So I keep one small box for all of these items until I am sure no more will come out of the wood work and then take that box to the loft and pack it all away.
- And once you are done, sit back and smile, now you have a clean slate ready again to decorate!

Hi! We always take down the decorations on New Years Day. It's just a nice tradition and the twinkling lights, etc are still there for New Year's Eve, giving the holiday spirit one last hurrah. I like the box ideas!
I put all of my trees and decorations really late this year, so I wanted to enjoy them as long as I could. Just finished cleaning up after the last holiday dinner party- I will probably start taking a few down tomorrow. With 7 trees, it will take a while! LOL Have a happy new year!

Hi Jessa...
Loved this post, my friend! Thank you so much for sharing your organizational tips for clearing up the holiday! I purchased several nice big, plastic bins last week so that I can organize all my Christmas decor before putting it away. Sooo...wish me luck! Hehe! We are still enjoying all the Christmas decor at our place. I usually don't start decorating until the first week of December...so I leave it up through the first week of January!
Well sweet lady, just wanted to wish you and your family blessings for a Happy New Year! I am so glad that I met you and I'm looking forward to what the coming new year holds for us!
Warmest wishes,
Chari @Happy To Design
