I especially like the "overnight for the kids with grandparents" suggestion. :o) Here's more ideas:

Do a puzzle together.

Go to a concert (bagpipe, blues, etc) or the symphony. Some concerts give free performances. Also, many community colleges give recitals and performances free to the general public.

Explore a ghost town.

Plan a backpacking adventure.

Schedule a hot-air balloon ride.

Visit a famous cave (with a guide).

Search for fossils.

Fly a kite (somewhere without a lot of power lines and with a good wind - like the coast or a fairground).

Take a sleigh ride in the snow (many tourist towns offer these).

Plan a family music gathering where everyone with talent plays or sings.

Throw a scavenger hunt party.

Invite family, friends and/or neighbors to a bonfire where you roast hotdogs and marshmallows.

Great Ideas, the best is just sitting down with the calendar and planning. We just got back from a weekend with 50 relatives at a state park. Every year we rent screened in shelters and the group shelter. Texas State Parks are fun and affordable! My daughter made up a "Family Feud Game" with surveys off the internet, which was a big hit this year, mostly we eat, swim, play games and visit. Lezlee
