Snow-tubing
Every Monday from January to September.
Snow tubing is a fun, cold, wonderful, memory making trip. Many States offer wonderful snow-tubing resorts. They are often part of the local ski areas although there are some stand alone tubing resorts. The one near me tows you up to the top of a football sized groomed hill. You pay in the neighborhood of $20 per adult and $5 per child. This is for a 2hour session that includes the use of their tube.
A cheaper alternative is to visit a near by snow park instead of a resort. You will need to bring your own tube and parking permit are often required. The snow parks and in my area run $20 for the day for the permit and have seasonal options. You can find permits online, or in sporting retail stores, or state park offices. Contact your local Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) to find out more in your area.
When spending time in the snow think dry and warm clothing from head to toe. Remember sunglasses to avoid glare from the snow. Sunscreen and chap stick are important too! While you are out there remember to allow right of way to people coming downhill, warn others as you pass them, fill in your hole with snow if you fall, don't walk on a groomed trail, when stopping move to the side of the trail and leave pets at home. A thermos of hot cocoa, cider, coffee or tea is really nice to come back to when you are trying to warm up in the car.
Before you go check the weather and park to confirm they are open. Have snow tires and chains. Practice putting the chains on before you go. On the side of the road, in the snow is no time to learn. If reservations are needed it is a good idea to do this before you go as parks fill up quickly. And if you have small children check age restrictions.
