The beginning of February on my Year-Round Calendar is the time I start looking at gardening goals, supplies, and maintenance. Where I live spring is still another month or so away, some places spring has already begun. If you are following along with me on my plan and your spring is earlier you may want to adjust this date a bit to fit your climate.
My ultimate goal is to do all of the preparation and planning by spring, all of the gardening during the spring months while it is nice outside but not too hot. And then to be able to relax and enjoy the garden and guests in the summer with minimal maintenance.
Take some time to clearly define your goals for this upcoming year, buy tools, obtain cost estimates, dream, design, organize. And take a walk though you space.
Some questions to ask: What gardening goals do you have this year? Do you have all of the tools you need, will you need to buy plants, seeds, or hire professional help? Are you stuck for ideas and need to buy one of those amazing computer programs that help you to plan a garden?Or subscribe to a gardening magazine to get some fresh ideas? Are you putting in a flower bed? Veggies? Fruit trees? Do you need to put down bark, or put in foundation plantings? Can you add bird houses, squirrel feeders, birdseed, bat and butterfly houses, garden decorations? Do you need to install hardscapes such as walkways, arbors, or patios? Will your gardens need stepping stones? Have you always wanted a green house? Do you want to start a container garden? Do you have an adequate spot for your gardening tools? What maintenance will your garden need?
One thing I have learned from having a lot of grass is to check the lawn mower and weed eaters before it is time to mow. They often quit working over the winter and discovering this when you are all ready to go out and mow is no fun, by the time they are fixed the lawn is overgrown.
And if you love native plants, now is a good time to find out which ones are native for your area. Most native flowers attract more butterflies than the plants usually sold as 'butterfly' plants. Also there are a wonderful variety of organic pest controls and natural fertilizers that are becoming more popular all the time.

You're making me feel disorganized:) Oh, that's right. I AM disorganized.
Tomorrow, I'm attending a class in hopes of learning more about how our yards represent the last chance for sustaining plants and animals that were once common throughout the United States.

Hi Jessa!
Thanks for following Oils For Wellness! Will you come to Wisconsin to mentor me in gardening? I love plants, but don't have a clue how to get them to grow!
Be well, Jen
