Raised Bed Gardening

Raised bed gardening. Bricks, wood, and edging stones, large pots, even kids plastic swimming pools can be used to make a raised bed garden. They can be anywhere from simple to beautiful. This is a raised bed planter at my mother's house. I took these photos last summer when we went for a visit. She, unlike me, is an amazing gardener so I "interviewed" her.

This corn bed is only three bricks high, her ground is uneven so on one side it is only about two bricks high. She stripped the grass under the bed, and then laid the bricks without mortar. She then filled it with kitchen scraps at the bottom and added a mixture of compost and native soil over that.

To keep them watered she uses soaker hoses hooked to timers so she never forgets.

Above are potato flowers.

Below is a pea bed. It is hard to tell in this photo, but the peas are about 6 feet tall.

What a green thumb your mom has. I love her garden and it is just the perfect size to enjoy!
Hope it gives her plenty of bounty again this season..

Hi Jessa Irene,

This is so cool! I was planning on putting a garden in this year and using raised beds. I love the brick idea that your Mom did. We even have some bricks. I had never thought of using kids swimming pools. My idea was using the livestock watering rounds and ovals, because they wouldn't wear out. They would cost more up front, but you don't have to bend over as much, and they will absorb the heat during the day (it gets cold at night here, even during the summer).

Great post. Take care and God bless,

Kathy
