May is the month for pumpkins in most areas of the United States.
From Jack-o-lanterns for Halloween...
To pie pumpkins for Thanksgiving...
This is the month to get the seeds in the ground.
This first became a tradition in my family after reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Farmer Boy is all about one little boys childhood. That little boy grew up to marry Larura Ingalls who wrote the 'Little House' book series. The book describes planting and caring for pumpkins, this so enchanted one of my sons that we have not missed a year to plant pumpkins since.

I had no idea that you planted Pumpkins in May. I would have waited way too late. Now I am going to have to get some pumpkin seeds. Thank you so much!!
How did you know that I have two different kinds of pumpkins growing in one of our bathrooms just waiting to be planted outside? haha
I'm not familiar with the book "Farmer Boy"...but it's going on my list. Just bought "Where the Red Fern Grows" to read to P and C & J from next door. They sit at the kitchen counter eating lunch/snack while I read a chapter to them.

I love Autumn and what would it be without all of the pumpkins and goards? I didn't know I needed to plant though, I thought it was June here in AZ, but now that I know I am going to go get some seeds from the garden supply and get busy! Thanks!

YOu should join the garden carnivals at Bloomin Tuesday and Fertilizer Friday - the links are on my blog (I am not affiliated with tem - just love to see all the gardens!) Thanks for sharing - I am going to check out the rest of your blog...Paula in Idaho
Very informative post! Although I loved the Little House series, I did not know anything about Farmer Boy. I am going to look for it. It seems strange to be thinking about pumpkins right now. I did not realize they had to be planted so early. It sounds like a fun tradition.
