Vacation Idea #22- Butterfly Conservatories

Vacation Idea #22
Butterfly Conservatories

Butterfly conservatories, gardens, houses and habitats make for a lovely addition to a vacation and are just a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Most of these conservatories are in a building or green house that have a natural but carefully controlled environment. Most charge an entrance fee, some are part of a larger exhibit or zoo, while others only require a donation. Travel light when you go, more than likely you will be asked to leave purses, coats and other items at the door as butterflies can hide in small places and be accidentally transported out by visitors. In addition, the conservatories are heated so heavy jackets are not needed anyway. When we went were were checked by attendants as we left just to make sure we did not have butterflies on us and had to walked under a little fan just in case.

When I took these photos I never imagined they would end up on my blog, and we did not have a really good camera at that point so a few are blurry, but I still wanted to share them.
See the intent little face in the upper left hand corner,

as he intently studied every detail of a butterfly eating a banana?

This was a laugh. 'Lets see the orange butter fly looks like? Oh yeah, the one he landed on!'

This butterfly is on a fake flower, we thought that silly because there were so many real flowers!

Ok, don't move, let me get the picture!

We saw butterflies eat, fly, drink from mud puddles, caterpillars, cocoons (some that were wiggling), and some just emerged butterflies spreading their wings. But be careful where you step we saw them on the ground right in the middle of our path! Luckily, we managed to dodge them, which was tricky because they blend in well.

I found three sites that list butterfly conservatories by state. All three had different information for my area so I figured I would list them all for you. I am unsure of their accuracy so you will want to call ahead to verify. ( I am not affiliated in any way with any of these, just listing them for fun.)

My daughter loves the one at Seattle Center. She hopes and hopes that one will land on her each time, but they never do. But, we keep going and keep hoping.

I just wanted to pop over and thank you for your sweet comment! And thanks so much for these links to butterfly conservatories! I went to one a few years ago and LOVED it! And then I moved. So I would love to take my son to one. :)

Once a year they bring in a big showing of butterflies. I have been and it is so interesting. They just light all over you and do not seem to be bothered by people.

I love butterflies and visiting butterfly conservatories. I used to have a butterfly garden at my last home and it was such fun identifying the one that came to visit us. I am hoping to create another one next year when I redo the landscaping at my current home.

Thank you for the virtual stroll through the butterfly conservatory.
