The Deer in My Yard

They are taking over! Really, you have to see the photos below!

On a recent post of my garden (here) I posted the photo below and I had a few comments on the deer, so I thought I would share my thoughts on deer. But first, see how tiny that fawn is?

This next photo is not an uncommon site at my house. We do not live in the woods or anywhere where you think deer would live. Most yards around here have fences and dogs. We live next to a busy road and very near some businesses, but here they are all the same. Yes, there are five in the photo.

And they eat everything.

Including my roses.
But, I have found, they only nibble. A leaf here. A flower there. Hardly ever do they destroy a plant. (Except vegetables which I have learned to put mesh around) Maybe, it is because we have enough wild bushes that they like. Maybe it is because there are enough gardens around here to snack from ;), but I have lots of flowers they hardly ever touch.

And I have an apple tree.
I have never trimmed the bottom of this apple tree, the deer do it for me, and they dispose of the fallen apples for me as well.

And sometimes, out in the open, near a busy road, they even sleep here. Which makes me wonder who's home this is after all. I think between my flowers and the deer, I'll keep the deer. And if you think I am crazy look again at the faces above.

So you have a truly enchanted garden then huh? They are so beautiful! Do they allow you near them in the yard, or when they are visiting do you have to surrender ownership?

I would keep the deer too! How lovely that they are comfortable enough to roam in your yard. It says a lot about you and your neighborhood. I would definitely give up a few flowers to see those beauties in my back yard!!

That looks like my yard. We live by a pecan orchard and have tons of deer.....eating everything. Great photos!

To answer the ownership question above. My dear older neighbor swears he can get within three feet of them and they are fine. I am not that brave and for me they tend to scare easily so I give them lots of room so they do not run into the busy road near us.

They really are taking over. The only time I don't like them around is when I'm driving. Other than that, I'll take them whenever. (But can I keep the flowers too?)

I just love your deer. I wish I had some to trim my apple tree and eat the fruit that has fallen. I only have a family of possums and they don't help too much!

I'm with you - I would take the deer!

I have to share with you my post about 'poop bags'. Sounds crazy and NO this is not SPAM! I wrote about these new 'organic' bags you can make up to keep the deer away. IT IS WORKING so far! I spotted 2 doe eating off of the only tree we didn't put a bag on.

Hope this helps... will check back to see what you come up with.

Thanks you two, but I DO NOT have a problem with our deer, I love them! I am honored that they have a safe haven here.
