Grandparents Day History and Fun Facts
National Grandparents-day was originated by Marian McQuade (see here photo here ) and made a National holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. In the U.S. it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. In the UK it is the first Sunday in October.
Marian McQuade envisioned a holiday where the elderly in nursing homes were visited, wisdom and heritage were passed to the younger generation, and she urged youth to "adopt" a life-long grandparent. Hermine Beckett Hanna is also recognized for her roll in creating Grandparents day. (Wikipedia)
There is even an official Grandparents Day song! See it here.
I love this holiday because it is a chance for our family to connect. We always give a little token or make a call. It is usually met with a surprise, something like "it is what day?". Everyone comes away with smiles, and we are all just a little closer. And if you are a grandparent today: Happy Grandparents Day to you!
