Peanut butter taste starting from the cake: I used a regular cake mix from a box, added a 1/2 cup of peanut butter to the mixture and reduced the oil and water slightly. Cooked as directed on the box. Cooled completely and then I cut the top off to make a level cake (this is important for this cake) and torted the cake for the filling.
Peanut butter taste in the frosting: 1part butter to 4 parts powdered sugar thinned with a little milk will make a good butter cream frosting, but for this one I halved the butter with peanut butter and it was amazing. You can use chunky or smooth peanut butter depending on your tastes. I then filled the cake with frosting and covered the top, leaving the sides bare.
To decorate: Starting in the center and working outward I used a regular pastry bag with no tip (you can also use just a regular freezer bag with the corner cut) to make peaks.
And you could stop here and have a really dramatic cake,
but if you have a die-hard peanut butter cup fan:
Peanut butter cups are a must!

This looks fabulous. I love your peaks and you are right it would be gorgeous if you stopped there, but then to put the whole peanut butter cups on, wow. This was a great tutorial. I made a peanut butter cream cheese frosting but haven't done the peanut butter buttercream frosting. It gives it such a pretty color. I love fancy cakes and everyone is so wowed and they are really pretty easy. Lovin this!
