Vacation Idea #21- A Tree Top Hike

WISH i was on HOLIDAY
A summer feature on Holiday Haven

In Whistler, BC you can find a 1.5 hour guided tour that takes along trails and walkways with suspension bridges over 15 stories high.
With platforms built around the tops of trees.
Beautiful views.
And you did not realise that you are 15 stories up...
until you looked over the edge.
Our family went on this tour as part of our trip to Whistler this year, and it was a highlight!
To find out more about the tour you can visit Ziptrek.com Click on "Whistler" and "Tours".

Memorial Day

Honoring all of those who have died in our nations service.

Memorial day is tomorrow. This holiday became official in 1869. Originally it was was called 'decoration day' as it was tradition to honor the fallen by laying flowers on their graves.

This photo is of my son carrying a banner of a fallen soldier in a memorial day parade last year with his scout troop. When the troop passed with these banners a hush fell over the crowd and the onlookers stood. The reverence from a crowd that was only moments earlier laughing, talking, and ooohing and awwwing over the different floats is something I do not think I will ever forget.

Screen Time Certificates

School is out (or almost anyway) in most places. That means SCREEN TIME or, so my kids think. But, I have gotten 'crafty' on them and made up these little redeemable coupons that they can earn.

I haven't decided just yet what they will have to do to earn them. Chores? Probably. Reading? They like to read so I might just leave that as something they can do after they run out of certificates. A good dead? Definitely, I love to reward them for good works.

I do know I will only allow them to earn 2 hours worth each day, and they can save them up or use them one at a time. And because I have some smarties who might figure out to look at mom's blog for these I think I will add the clause: 'only good with mom's signature on the back'. You are welcome to print these and use them for your household if you would like. I made them in 10, 15, and 20 minute increments to suit whatever works best for you.

To print: click on the photo to expand it then set your cursor over the photo and right click it and select print photo. Or once the photo is expanded click 'file' and 'print' from the menu at the top of your browser. If you have any trouble try adjusting things in 'print preview' or saving the file to your computer or paint program and printing from there. (If using Firefox, you may need to click once to expand them and then again to magnify before printing, they should print out as a full page). Enjoy!

Fairy Gardens

Inspired by the fairy gardens I have seen online lately,
I took the braided azalea that I used for this tablescape:
(You can see the full tablescape here).
Potted it in a larger pot.
And added birds...
little glass leaves...
green glass 'stones'...
and a small garden angel.

Online coupon codes (review)

Do you shop online? If so, you should know about coupon codes. Most online stores offer coupon codes. These are codes used to identify a discount offer such as free shipping, or a certain amount off your order, or the like. Usually this code is entered during the online checkout process. If you are not familiar with them you can see a video about coupon codes HERE.

A great site to find discount coupon codes is www.couponchief.com. You can search by tags such as jewelry, Christmas, or toys. Or, you can browse by sites/stores such as  Amazon.com, Target.com, Safeway.com, Ancestory.com, Ebay, Zappados.com, Kitchenaid.com, and even Etsy are just a (very, very) few of the stores that they have coupon codes for. Also, you can earn money by sharing coupons. Click the the 'pays-to-share' tab at the top of that site to see more information.

(This is a sponsored review. I do not accepted reviews unless I honestly believe my readers would love to know about the site or product.)

Under the Apple Tree - Summer Tablescape

Planted in the 60's our apple tree "weeps" (like a willow) to where you can stand under it and feel as if you are under an outdoor canopy.

So for my family I set up this little tablescape under the apple tree.

Our everyday plates and a whimsical table cloth.

Light napkins to draw out the yellows and golds.

It has been a little cooler this week so I though some hot apple cider sounded nice for this scape.

I put the candles in wine glasses to shield them from any wind.

Candle Holders Decorated with Sea Glass

Ever wonder what to do with sea glass?

To make these you need sea glass, hot glue, and a candle holder.

Attach the sea glass to the candle with a small drop of hot glue,
fitting them together like a puzzle as you go, until it is mostly covered.

Real sea glass, if you are in an area where you can find it, provides the best result as it has different shapes, thicknesses, textures, and occasionally letters.

And a few tips:
S'mores, bacon, corn on the cob, and hot cocoa are great for camping. Individual drinks always work best for us. Lunchables are nice to take hiking. CASH, we always seem to end up somewhere that only takes cash. Cell phones do not usually work in the woods, but on the off chance they will, making sure they are fully charged before you go helps.  Games are fun for the kids. I never get around to making tea while camping, so I stick to coffee, french presses work well. Cook extra the last night for dinner.  The smell of campfire food is delicious at home and makes for easy leftovers when you are tired and trying to settle back in.

Join me June 5-20th for a Father's Day linky party!

How to get rid of aphids

Ugly little buggers. I was going to blog about something else, but was looking out my window admiring the beautiful Hot Pink roses that grace my window and what did I see but aphids. I was so surprised, we have not had any in years. The reason? I know a trick and here it is: A dash of dish soap (biodegradable is best) and one part food oil to two parts water mixed in a spray bottle will does the trick. Bye, bye aphids!

Watering plants while on vacation

A simple set and forget way to water your garden while you are on vacation. I am not a gardener, I try, but this is an area that I am still struggling to master. My Mother, however, is amazing with plants so I "interviewed" her about watering and here is what she had to say:

"You can buy a water meter for $20 and up in Lawn and Garden sections of retail establishments or in home improvement stores. They come with different features depending on how fancy you want to get but you only need a meter that will turn itself on and off according to a timer you preset You'll want to check the package before you leave the store to make sure you have the right battery on hand. Mine takes one 9-volt battery that lasts all season. When the battery is dead it's time to stop watering again anyway.

You will also want a splitter, a fitting that allows you to attach two hoses to your faucet and turn them on and off individually. I bought a brass one for about $12 as I recall. It's pretty simple to attach the water meter to your faucet. The splitter goes below the water meter.

While you're in the store make sure you get way more soaker hose than you think you will need. Remember the object is to have living plants whey you return home. Loop these through the plants within your beds in circles so you water both sides of the roots. You'll attach your soaker hose end to a regular hose to get you across any patios and walkways to the garden itself. Attach the other end of the hose to one side of the splitter. You can leave the other side of the splitter free for filling watering cans or attaching a hose with sprayer, for catching potted plants, hosing down the patio, filling wading pools and the like.

Enjoy! I set this up as soon as possible in the summer to save me hours of time spent watering. You can set the meter and forget it. I usually program the meter to water once a day in the morning for increasingly long stretches of time as we move into summer. If I set the meter for night time the slugs get at the plants and makes them vulnerable to powdery mildew."

Making your home feel like a 'Bed and Breakfast'

What makes a Bed and Breakfast so attractive? It is the decor, the food, the amenities, all of the above? Is it the fact that you are on vacation and relaxed?  Of course (at least for most of us) your home is not a Bed and Breakfast there is work, responsibility, and cleaning to keep you busy. But why not create small moments, small places where you remember to sit and have a conversation or read a magazine. Small luxuries here and there. Here are some tips for creating a bed and breakfast attitude around your home:
  • Make muffins or a breakfast casserole you can pop into the oven at dinner time the night before for breakfast the next morning. Here is a site with tons of b&b recipes.
  • Have a 'quite time' in the evening. Turn out all the lights, light candles, play soft music, and talk about the day. (This is especially nice for children to unwind before bed).
  • Set a pretty basket of scented bath soaps and salts next to the sink or bathtub.
  • Set a garden table for breakfasts, snacks, or lunch.
  • Arrange a little side table with flowers and a book to remember to take time for yourself.
  •  Put a few drops of essential oils on the underside of bed or couch pillows.
  • Set up an 'outdoor living' room.
  • Place a bench in the garden and take time to watch the grass grow.
  • Add lots of blooming potted plants to your porch or entry way.
  • Have a campfire at night using outdoor fireplace.
And ask your loved ones what would make the morning rush nicer for them, maybe just having the windows open in the summer first thing in the morning would add a little joy to their day. It only takes just a little preparation to make a lovely memory for your family and provide you with a little time to relax and reflect.

Share your suggestions, what small thing do you do to create a wonderful atmosphere?

    Summer Breakfast

I was given this beautiful braided Azalea  for my birthday this last week.

And before I planted it in the garden I decided to set up a breakfast table scape to share with my wonderful husband, who gave me these flowers.

Not a cloud in the sky.

Vacation Idea #19 - Afterglow Mausoleum

    WISH i was on HOLIDAY

    - Vacation Idea #19 -
    Afterglow Mausoleum
    San Juan Island, WA

Imagine seeing a sign saying mausoleum and a narrow trail. You follow the sign through a lightly wooded area where there are ancient grave stones here and there along the trail with an occasional wrought iron fence around a group of graves. More dirt trail, more thin trees, and then you round a bend in the trail and catch a glimpse of the mausoleum in the photo above. Totally out of place in the middle of the forest. In truth, I knew what was at the end of the trail and that is why we took it, but I left it as a surprise to the rest of my family who were astounded.

    So what is this mausoleum?
It was built by John S. McMillin in the late 1800's. His son said the table represented the family table. And here is where it gets interesting... the chairs are crypts for their ashes. There is a chair for John and his wife Louella and for each of their five children. You can go here to see the names and dates of those buried here. The latest to be entombed in one of the chairs was the in the 1980's.  John McMillin was a mason and used a lot of their symbols. You can go here to see more about the symbols and their meaning. One of the most notable things is the broken pillar that he included in his design. There are a few theories as to why he left an unfinished column, but my favorite is that it represented the unfinished state of mans work. His original final design included a bronze dome with a cross atop the mausoleum.

Located near Roche Harbor on San Juan island, Washington, it is something you won't want to miss. A great site to visit about the San Juan's is www.sanjuansites.com & click the things to do tab. (All of the links in this article are un-sponsored, just found them fun and wanted to share).
